I feel like working with the horse totally shows how I am in some scenarios.
~D.R. Substance Use Disorder Group Hard times emotionally. Calmer + able to breathe space into anxious feelings.
~A.E. Substance Use Disorder Group Today I arrived here at Equine a bit on edge just due to some personal reasons in my life. We get to see & go in w/ the Mustangs which were so touching. Moonshine came up to me from behind & greeted me, it was so sweet. I wasn’t really looking forward to coming today, actually I was kinda regretting coming & now I’m so thankful & grateful I did. Seeing these gigantic beautiful beasts puts a smile on my face & in my heart. The pure fact that horses can help you process trauma & pain and actually make you feel better after doing so is quite extraordinary if you ask me.
The day is absolutely BEAUTIFUL today. I just told the group members (E, T, K & A) we couldn’t ask for a better day to be out here. The sun is shining & it’s HOT! Everyone except D---- is brushing the horses & I’m sitting here catching some UV rays. I f------ LOVE it! ~N.D. Substance Use Disorder Group I loved it. I feel my self-esteem rise with horses. They are amazing!
~E.P. Substance Use Disorder Group I thought that equine was very helpful for the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) boys. Many of them struggle with substance use and engage in oppositional behaviors and all of them have problems with mood and/or anxiety. It seems like the horses helped them open up and engage in treatment better. The horses seemed to give them an "excuse" to express some enthusiasm and they seemed to drop some of their defenses and seemed more willing to show their authentic selves. Some of the exercises were challenging and when the kids persevered and succeeded they seemed to feel a sense of pride and there was a definite positive energy.
In addition to some of the experiences at the ranch, I felt there was a shift overall in some of the group members and some of them were more inclusive and empathetic with others in the group. I am very grateful to have had the experiences with equine and I think the boys benefitted immensely from their experiences. It seems that some of them gained more from the five sessions of equine than they did from the months of IOP treatment before starting equine. ~Russell Bingham, CMHC Southwest Behavioral Health Center I cannot recommend Aubree highly enough.
